Banco BISA to Open Office in Panama, Panamanian Regulator Announces

Banco BISA, headquartered in Bolivia, will open an office in Panama after obtaining an international license to operate in the country, the Superintendency of Banks of Panama (SBP) announced on Friday July 24th..

The Bolivian bank will thus join Panama's International Banking Center (CBI), comprised of 62 institutions, and will be able to operate from an office with a license that allows it to "carry out transactions that are completed, finalized, or take effect abroad," as well as other authorized activities.

Banco BISA is part of Grupo Financiero BISA, S.A., which has more than six decades of experience and "has established itself as one of the leading financial organizations in the country, offering a wide range of products and services," the banking sector regulator's statement highlights.

The bank's addition "represents a further step in strengthening Panama's International Banking Center (IBC), expanding the presence of established financial institutions and reinforcing the country's attractiveness as a regional platform for providing international banking services," according to the report.

As of May 2026, the International Banking Center maintained "favorable performance, supported by a comfortable liquidity position, robust solvency, positive profitability, and orderly balance sheet expansion," according to a report from the Superintendency of Banks of Panama for that month.

This result, the study continues, occurred within a context of "positive growth, with a cumulative Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) close to 5%, contained inflation, and general conditions that continued to favor the stability of the financial system."

Specifically, the Panamanian economy is showing moderate growth, driven by the Canal, trade, finance, and construction, with GDP growing 4.8% in the first quarter and cumulative activity reaching 4.88% through May.
